An orthodontist is a specialist dentist, that specializes in straightening of a person's teeth and the correcting of a person's jaw alignment.

Orthodontic treatment can be purely to improve a person's appearance or to fix an improper bite. Improper bite is caused by having teeth irregularity and or a misaligned jaw.

In most cases you will be referred by a dentist to an orthodontist for these such conditions.

Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic treatment, either cosmetic or structural can improve appearance, correct improper bites and various other conditions of the teeth, jaw and mouth.

Braces and retainers are the most common application to help align and straighten teeth.

Orthodontists also use devices which are removable such as plates, headgear, expansion devices and various others to help move and correct teeth and jaw alignment. An orthodontist may use functional devices in younger patients which can help their growing bone and teeth reform around them.

Orthodontist Training

An orthodontist typically needs 2 to 3 years more study or training after completing a dental degree. This specialized orthodontist education and training ensures each orthodontist is an expert at the application of the different orthodontic treatments.
